The Studio

Where It All Began

Located in the heart of Santa Monica, California, Clearmountain's Berkeley Street Studios is a one-of-a-kind immersive music venue and creative environment where acclaimed artists and award-winning technology come together under one roof.

The studio has hosted legendary performances and recordings from some of music's most iconic names — including Mick Jagger & The Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish & FINNEAS, John Fogerty, John Mayer, Weezer, and many more. In addition to private sessions and artist showcases, the studio has become known for its live performances — including a celebrated series produced in collaboration with KCRW.

Audiences of up to 180 guests experience concerts personally mixed by Bob Clearmountain — live, in the room. It's one of the more singular things you can do in Los Angeles.

The People Who Built This Place

Betty Bennett co-founder of Clearmountain's Berkeley Street Studios and Apogee Electronics

Betty Bennett

Betty Bennett founded Apogee Electronics in 1985, establishing the company as a pioneer in digital audio conversion and recording technology. Under her leadership for over 40 years, Apogee earned multiple TEC Awards and became known worldwide for products used in the world's top studios.

In 2005, Bennett collaborated with Bob Clearmountain to transform unused space in Apogee's Santa Monica headquarters into a professional recording studio and performance venue — combining decades of technical innovation with a singular creative vision.

Bob Clearmountain

Described by Sound on Sound as having "his name on more hit records than anyone else in the history of popular music," Bob Clearmountain is credited with establishing the role of mixing engineer as we know it today. Working from Studio M — his personal Mix This! studio at Berkeley Street — Bob has mixed for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Fire Aid, and the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert. He also mixed the award-winning Bryan Ferry Atmos record from this room.

His two Emmy Awards, TEC Les Paul Award (1991), TEC Lifetime Achievement Award (1992), Music Producers Guild Icon Award (2023), and honorary doctorate from Berklee NYC (2025) represent decades of sustained excellence at the very top of the craft.

Studio M — Mix This!

Bob Clearmountain's
Private Studio

Studio M is Bob Clearmountain's personal mixing studio — Mix This! — rebuilt at Clearmountain's Berkeley Street Studios after his original studio was lost in the Palisades fires. What rose from that loss is something remarkable: a room rebuilt with the full support of the professional audio community, carrying forward every piece of the history that came before it.

From Studio M, Bob has mixed landmark broadcasts and events including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Fire Aid, and the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert. He also mixed the award-winning Bryan Ferry Atmos record from this room.

The console is more than a piece of equipment — it's a record of history. The mixing board carries plaques recognizing the people and projects that have passed through it, each one a chapter in a story that spans decades of popular music.

MixThis! FTA — From The Ashes

Rebuilt by a Community

When fire devastated Bob's original Mix This! studio in the Palisades, what followed was one of the most remarkable demonstrations of solidarity the professional audio world has ever seen. Under the banner of MixThis! FTA — From The Ashes — the entire pro audio community rallied behind Bob Clearmountain to help rebuild the studio.

Manufacturers, engineers, and friends from across the industry contributed equipment, labor, expertise, and support. The plaques on Bob's mixing board stand as permanent recognition of those who gave their time and resources to bring the room back to life.
